Did I just rip the title off an Olivia Rodrigo song? Yes.
Was it on purpose? Heck yeah!
Although the song focuses on the turbulent journey of a relationship, the title itself can be interpreted through various other scenarios.
Let’s be honest, life’s a bit rude sometimes.
As soon as you reach a milestone, some random problem turns up and now you’re back to square one. Truth be told, in life you’ll never go past square one.
It’s not your fault though… failure just comes with the territory of being an ambitious individual in the 21st century.
Think about it.
The success that stems from every ambitious journey undertaken is not an accident by any means but rather a consistent and methodical work regime which has manifested into something greater.
You can almost never stick to the script… no matter what you first set out to do, this passion of yours evolves into something bigger. Just as your passion evolves, so do you and there’s nothing to be worried about!
Here’s a quick example from my own journey;
I first dipped my toes into the film space through editing. Soon after, I learned how to direct, produce and edit different types of content.
As of now, I am writing screenplays for both short and long form content that I hope to either option or produce myself.
(P.s. This was five years in the making)
The beauty of ambition is that it forces you to evolve and change with the dynamics of the world we live in. I like to think of ambition as the food for our brains.
It is one of the reasons for your our very existence and the answer to the golden question which is “Why am I doing all this?”. (When in doubt, keep a firm grip on the answer)
Now that you’ve learned why to be ambitious, train your mind and pace yourself in this journey of finding your purpose.
Why on earth should you get comfortable with change?
Simply put it;
You will either want to change or have to change. Either way, there is no way out of change itself, unless you’re in the matrix of-course. (Shoutout to Neo)
“Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by discomforts.” - Arnold Bennett
When we go through any journey in life, we always hope for it to be a linear one but that’s not always the case is it?
Our lives are like Christopher Nolan movies, constantly jumping back and forth in time as we desperately try to reach that new equilibrium.
Change is the catalyst in every journey.
Progress is change.
However reluctant and annoyed you may be at the timing of it all… this is one of many part and parcels of life that you cannot avoid.
It may seem conflicting to embrace change when last week’s newsletter focused on consistency so let me explain.
Consistency is a habit.
Change is either an outcome from that habit or just a form of adversity.
Now here’s why the phrase “one step forward and three steps back” is an amazing illustration of change as a concept.
Every time you reach a point where you think everything is just fine (one step forward) the universe conveniently unravels a plethora of problems for you to solve (three steps back).
However, after you manage to successfully solve these problems;
You will feel more enlightened.
You will be grateful for the de-tour.
You will have accepted change.
At the end of the day. There is no fun going about a monotonous journey.
In fact, life does you a favor by spicing things up with each obstacle in your way. It teaches you to be persistent, patient and optimistic during hardships to the point where openly welcoming change is your natural state of mind.
And when that happens, this journey towards finding your purpose gets a whole lot fun real quick!
Over and out Zoomers :)
