đ Stop Romanticizing Hustle Culture
Youâve learned to conquer your mind.
A superpower thatâs really useful when faced with any sort of adversity.
You feel that nobody can phase you or influence you in any negative way. You think that youâre untouchable and unbeatable in every sense.
So now you find yourself going full steam ahead, doubling your working hours, and reducing every contact with the outside world as you convince yourself about the long term benefits of sacrifice.
The focus has now shifted from consistency to one upping everybody around you. The âhighâ from seeing yourself miles ahead from everybody else gets to your head.
It catapults you into this unhealthy cycle where you start to become deprived of sleep, food and water. You wonât realize the dilemma youâre in until you-
CRASH.

Hustle culture is nothing but a toxic lifestyle that promotes the idea that the number of hours you work everyday is superior than the quality of the work itself.
When you lose sight on the fact that your body is the machine that helps you accomplish all the ambitious goals youâre setting then thatâs where everything goes downhill.
I myself have burnt out several times. For what though? The input dependent goals that I HAD CONTROL OVER?
The problem is that your ego tells you to keep going otherwise you risk disappointing yourself.
Also that âhighâ from seeing yourself miles ahead from your fellow competitors will be short lived. Once you find yourself in a rut, they will overtake you with ease.
Donât confuse hustling with falling in love with your craft because this obsession is a different kind. It is based on the principle of competition and comparison.
Hereâs why Hustle culture is faulty:
The number of hours sat in front of a desk does not translate to the amount of productive work done.
The concept only considers the quantitative figures of each subject and disregards all qualitative data pertaining to the task that each individual has undertaken.
You cannot make âproductivity / workâ a competition because it has no definitive criteria that is universally accepted by the world.
The ideology of work varies from country to country and is heavily influenced by culture.
Certain industries are more likely to have longer rigid work schedules than others. Therefore, it is unfair to diminish the efforts of people that find themselves in sectors that are more flexible as each career comes with its own challenges.
These are just a few reasons why hustle culture is a terrible way to measure output from an employee or any individual for that matter.
It is not a reason for one to brag as it not only promotes toxic behavioral habits but also ignorantly dismisses the countless people who have lost their lives to exhaustion.
When you overwork, you are more likely to be stressed because of deprivation to your body in many forms. This has several negative physical and mental effects to your immune system.
Hereâs another phrase for all of us to repeat together againâŠ
Consistency is productivity.
There is no timeframe put on consistency. It instead focuses on improving the quality of your work over time.
Hereâs a short little personal story that summarizes the concept of consistency and burnout:
When I was participating in competitive long distance races (10km or 6.2 miles) There was always one critical error a lot of people made and that was sprinting from the very start of the race.
I made sure to pace myself and gradually increase the momentum as the race progressed. By the 8th or 9th kilometer mark, I would see all the people who sprinted in the beginning walk as they used up all the energy in their tanks.
That was the time I seized the opportunity to sprint all the way to the finish line and believe me, it worked. I won thirteen races out of fifteen in the season so I can prove it.
So next time you decide to stay up late and âhustleâ. Remind yourself that this journey is a marathon and not a sprint.
Over and out Zoomers :)
